CARES Team 2022

Meet the CARES Team

Contact Us

The CARES (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Research Excellence Support) PreAward Team coordinators are available to assist with all sponsored funding proposals. Faculty and staff are encouraged to contact the CARES Team to assist with proposal development and submission. Investigators who have identified a funding opportunity can fill out the PreAward Support Initiation Form (green button below) which notifies their coordinator. They can also contact their coordinator directly or send an email to cares-team@iastate.edu. The Team is best able to provide thorough assistance when contacted as early as possible in the submission process.

The CARES Team supports all CALS, CHS, ENG, and LAS faculty and staff in the following departments/units: ABE, AGEDS, AGRON, ANSCI, CARD, CCUR, ECON, FSHN, GDCB, NREM, HORT, PPEM and SOCCJ, and provides backup support to other departments and units as needed.

CALS and LAS faculty and staff in the jointly administered departments BBMB, EEOB, and STAT rely on the LASERS (LAS External Research Support) Team (lasers@iastate.edu) as their first point of contact for pre-award support.

The CARES Team was the recipient of a 2021 Iowa State University Professional and Scientific Team CYtation Award.

Other Proposal Support Resources

Importance of Broader Impacts

Per NSF: Every NSF grant has the potential to not only advance knowledge, but benefit society -- what we call broader impacts. Just like the kaleidoscopic nature of science, broader impacts come in many forms. No matter the method, however, broader impacts ensure all NSF-funded science works to better our world.

Your Broader Impacts identity should represent the long-term impact and legacy your BI efforts will have on society.

The Center for Advancing Research Impact in Society (ARIS) has developed a tool kit to help develop broader impacts for NSF proposals - available here https://aris.marine.rutgers.edu/wizard/

Building Your Broader Impacts Identity

Do you need help with establishing and building your broader impacts identity? The Office of Biotechnology offers multiple programs to develop and implement broader impacts on federal grants via their Biotechnology Outreach Education Center at https://boec.biotech.iastate.edu/

Attend a Grant Development Workshop or Visit a Funding Agency

CALS encourages faculty and staff to participate in ISU, CALS, and external grant development workshops as well as scientific conference, or to visit funding agencies to discuss a research concept. The college can help cover travel costs for PIs to attend grant-related workshops or to visit national program leaders/program directors at federal funding agencies. Apply for support here. All travel support must be approved by the college prior to incurring any expenses.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to the CARES team for any questions you may have! We are here to help.
